Grebeg Gunungan Ceremony Yogyakarta

Grebeg is a ritual held Yogyakarta Palace as the top event or series of events Sekaten in Yogyakarta. Grebeg is held several times a year according to the Javanese calendar. The procession started by parading Gunungan (a variety of vegetable, fruits & snacks). Each gunungan has its own name: kakung (male), estri or putri (female), dharat and pawuhan, as well as its own meaning. The procession started from the front door of Yogyakarta Palace accompanied by a guard of soldiers Kraton/Palace (called Bergodo) to the Mosque Gedhe Kauman for grabs. Javanese community believe that when we can get a piece of the Gunungan we could get a blessing. This ceremony originally were initiated by Sultan Hamengkubuwana I, the founder of Yogyakarta Sultanate to promote the Islamic faith.
