Mayfield Carnival and the Bonfire Societies

The Mayfield Carnival dates back to the Catholic Reformation in the 16th century, when 4 Protestant men were burnt at the stake. Every year there is a procession through the village of groups (Bonfire Societies) from local villages carrying torches, beating drums and dressed in elaborate costumes. Some are dressed as pirates, some as Tudors, some as outlaws. It is quite a spectacle for all the family, as it ends in a funfair, fireworks and a huge bonfire. The event usually takes place in the middle of September.
